A Winter Walk

Back in Minneapolis a few weeks ago we had the chance to get together with some of our favorite players in the Wedding game. We kept it pretty loose and luckily all the details just fell into place how refreshing!

With the main goal being spring we pulled a few dresses from the incomparable ladies at The White Room MPLS and shot three looks. This was actually the last dress, we ventured out of Jen's studio into the empty space down the hall and just decided to let the beauty of the white winter scene shine through.

A few words on editing roadblocks.

I have the tendency to jump right into editing a project as soon as I get it all loaded into Lightroom. I pick my favorites and then whittle them down to something manageable for the project and apply our base "Ninethirty special sauce" edit and tweak from there until we are happy with the image.

We started with this image, witch I was actually pretty happy with but it wasn't grabbing Garrett in any particular way. Each small edit we tried kind of left it laying flat, it has a darker lighting style then we are used to shooting with and it kept jumping up like a road block. We set them aside for a week or so and in that time we went to the Chuck Close photographic exhibit at the Henry Art Gallery. Both of us were really drawn to his daguerreotype series. The use of light and shadow, the raw emotional quality, and the ah-mazing artistic voice he has of course. We tried this gelatin silver like edit on the series and it transformed into something completely different from where we began.

Big thanks to our team as always:

We bounce back and forth a lot on what our next lens purchase will be. The fun part? Renting all the goods to try them out. We rented a handy dandy Cannon 100mm Macro Lens for our Pantone Editorial and again for another beauty feature with Makeup artist Jennifer Des Lauriers. I love it and I want it... Check it out:

The set was recently featured in Elegant Magazine's December Beauty issue. We couldn't have done it without our amazing team:

Emerald City Pet Rescue (1)

We ran the whole 6 blocks over from the studio today and set up shop at Emerald City Pet Rescue, a non profit dedicated to rescuing, nurturing, and rehabilitating homeless and neglected animals. We had the chance to meet 8 amazing little pups that could use a warm and cozy home for the holidays. I mean, best Christmas present ever! Each one had so much personality, it's hard to pick a favorite.

I can't imagine our home without our two little rascals, hoping each and every of these cuties finds their forever home soon.

Contact info@emeraldcitypetrescue.org if you want to meet any of the pups!

I've been wanting to do a shoot with this concept for a while now and the right team fell in place so we jumped right on it! We worked with Seattle based artist, Devin McCabe, to create a series of paintings and makeup artist Melissa Korn translated them into a series of beauty looks on our models, Sofia Tveter and Anya Zaytseva from Seattle Models Guild. Finishing with hair by Heather Strock, owner of Canary Salon. A selection from the series was featured on Solstice Magazine's digital editorial section.

Nothing better then working with a team that works well together. We had an opportunity to get together with Gen and Karla twice over the last few months. Both shoots were killer on their own, and so completely different from each other.

The first shoot featured in EDWARD MAG 04

Get back to the land

I had a little mid-week free day and took it upon myself to wake up before the sunrise and head to the wilderness. Meeting up with Stephanie, we took a morning drive to Mount Rainier National Forest and soaked in the natural beauty and fresh air.

As I cozied in at home Joni Mitchell came on in the background (a little wine, candles, some nice wool socks and Joni Mitchell, you can be jealous...) and the lyrics struck me as I scanned through the days photographs.

Got to get back to the land, and set my soul free.
We are stardust, we are golden, we are billion year old carbon,
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden.

I consider myself so intensely lucky that I live in a place with such outstanding beauty. Just a short drive up to the mountains and my head is clear, I've unplugged and taken the time to be inspired and relish in the things that matter most.

The family that plays together...

It's becoming more of a regular thing... and I like it. Cousins weekend! A ridiculous excuses to relax and eat and drink together for a few days in a different location every time. Granted we didn't get every cousin in on it this go around but there are a few babies on the way and I suppose that's a legitimate reason....

#matRICKmony (part one)

We had so much fun reliving this day. From the moment we met up with Nick for a cut and a shave to the last song of the night this wedding was 100% full. Full of love, family, friends, cuteness, tears, laughter, and #rick. We had so many favorites we had to split it into two parts...

#matRICKmony (part one)

Part two... they say I do and everyone dances all night long.... coming soon!

At home with The Bennett's

We stopped into The Bennett's home last week when we were back in MN. Had a nice little morning, sipped coffee, caught up and snapped a few pictures. We've been wanting to try and get someone to let us do an in home session, capturing an average day in the life. Oliver and Henry (and Lila and Matt) were pretty great sports about us invading their morning routine.

Rob & Katie Round Two

and so we meet again... (check out the first time here.)

We rendezvoused with Rob & Katie at their place in Uptown, Minneapolis for a few warm up snaps around the neighborhood and then did a quick change and headed downtown for our more formal session. They were troopers as we followed them around like bees, Garrett attacking one angle and me popping out of nowhere (behind bushes, cars, hiding in door frames... I guess it's my thing now).

#RICK (the night before)

I don't even know how to put into words what a perfect weekend we had shooting Robin & Nick's wedding. Starting at moto i for an Open Mic style rehearsal dinner, Robin and Nick were regaled by family and friends as they preformed a selection of songs for the couple, with the couple and about the couple and so on. We had just enough fun that some of us were still bright eyed and bushy tailed for their nuptials the following morning.

From This Day Forward

We recently got together with Seattle Make-up Artist Jamyrlyn Mallory and Model Priya Mareedu for a test featuring a few gorgeous dresses from The Dress Theory. We came up with this fun, vintage-meets-modern series of bridal styled looks perfectly tied together with florals from Lola Creative.

Hurricane AmanDrew

If rain on your wedding day is a good omen I can only imagine the good vibes heading towards Drew and Amanda as they embark on their life as a married couple. What started out as a bought of bad weather turned into Tropical Storm Hermine, I've never seen two people take anything in such an easy even keel stride. Both were too excited to let a little rain, wind, lighting and such get in the way of their nuptials.

They gathered together with friends and family at the Brooklyn Arts Center in Wilmington, North Carolina. Luckily, the venue hosted the entire event from ceremony to the dance and we didn't have to venture out into the storm...

Rob & Katie Round One

Rob and Katie, two Minneapolis sweethearts, just so happened to be in North Carolina at the same time as us for Drew and Amanda's wedding. Since Katie has a deep love of the ocean I suggested we take a few casual shots while we were there and round out our portrait session when we are back in the MPLS in a week or so. Without further ado, here is round one:

Drew and Amanda's Beachside Rehearsal

Our adventure started last week when Garrett was biking in his last race of the season. On the second to last lap I lost track of him assuming I just missed him, but the last lap finished and still no Garrett. A trip to the ER and two cracked ribs later he was down for the count.

A week of rest and relaxing came to a close and we packed all the gear, loaded it onto my back, and made our way to North Carolina. I'm considering myself lucky that he was feeling up to the trip because, you know, we're a team...

We met up with Drew and Amanda and a some more sweet Minnesotans at a breathtaking beachside rental. Between catching up with friends and the taco buffet we managed to grab a couple of pictures.

Huge success of a night in my opinion, and what a great way to get you ready for the rest of Hurricane AmanDrew.
